Picking up the donkey's leg

My family canonized Michael years ago.  My sister outright says:

"Michael has to be a saint for putting up with you."

If I ever jokingly say I am the better half to my children, or that I have put up with Michael for all these years.  I get the look, they roll their eyes and say:

"WHATEVER"

I concede communication with me is not easy.

Me:

"Oh by the way..................................................."

I walk to the lounge and sit down on the couch and start doing something on my laptop.

Michael follows me from the kitchen to the lounge.

Michael:

"By the way what?"

Me:

"Huh?"

Michael:

"You started telling me something in the kitchen."

Me:

"Did I? Probably not important."

Michael:

"SIGH"

Michael:

"I have something to tell you.  Are you listening?"

Me:

"Yip"

Michael:

"Something, something,  blah blah blah blah.

VIVIAN ARE YOU LISTENING?'

At this point I am screwed if I say yes, he is going to ask me what he said.  If I say no, then why did I say I would listen?

Me:

"Sorry no."

Michael:

"SIGH"

You see it is not that I outright ignore people.  I completely live in my own world.  I am also so easily distracted.  Michael says that I am possibly the only woman in the world who cannot multi-task.  When I do something I block everything else out.

I explained to Michael that he is behaving like the drug addicts and the donkey.

Michael:

"HUH"

Me:

"I watched this movie about a drug addicts in rehab.  The councillor guy told them to try and pick up this donkey's leg.  When the one way did not work, they tried a different way.  The councillor guy said, 'If you keep trying the same things and the result is the same, you should not be surprised."

Michael:

"And what has that got to do with anything?"

Me:

"I was this way when we met, I am always going to be this way, yet you keep expecting a different result."

Michael:

"SIGH"

  1. You make me laugh, Viv. That's what I like about you so much - you're willing to put yourself out there and tell us like it is. Michael has been canonized - that's great. It is the opposite in my house. Dave is like you he can only do one thing at a time, and even then he will get flustered. Next time I start to get exasperated I'll remember what you said - it's true he was like this when we met and probably always will be! :)

  3. Thanks Stephanie, it is often the things we like the most about people that can drive us crazy as well.

  4. Thanks Rachel, I suppose donkeys are a better animal in a rehab, a junky might high tail it off to his dealer on a horse.

  6. Aah I am going to make it a catch phrase, next time my Michael moans that I am not listening, I am going to say,"You are picking up the donkey's leg again."
