Hamba Kahle Baba

In Zulu "Hamba Kahle" means "Go Well" and "Baba" means father.

In South Africa we were never very fond of our presidents during apartheid they were stuffy, right wing idiots who loved the sound of their own voices.

Verwoed started Apartheid
DF Malan
PW Botha was always waving his fingers at people.  I hated this man when I was a child.
The last of the apartheid presidents FW de Klerk next to President Mandela

The only one that was likable was the last one FW de Klerk he deserves credit for helping the transition to democracy go smoothly.

In the 90's we went from being used to having terrible presidents to having the best president ever, Nelson Mandela or Madiba as we affectionately call him.

He is in a critical condition.  I know he is getting the best medical care but I think that is part of the problem.  He is 94 and his health is so bad it is time to let him go.

A very young Mandela

Burning his pass.  Black people were forced to carry passes during Apartheid and were jailed if found not to be carrying them

Wearing the style shirt that he is so well known for.

I love and admire you so much for the person you became Madiba, go softly into the night.

  1. Lovely tribute. He's had a long life, hasn't he? Not all of it happy, but his legacy will live on. Madiba - of course I haven't heard that living on the other side of the world. I like knowing you have an affectionate name for him. Nice post, vivian.
