Selling the Cow

About a hundred years ago when my parents still subscribed to Readers Digest magazines, I read an article about Selling the Cow.

A guy wrote that he grew up in a small farm town.  Most of the people lived on small holdings and did not have much money.   A large and exciting fair came to a big town not too far from them.  A very poor and large family, that lived next door to this guy, wanted desperately to go.  This family's main source of income was their cow.  This cow produced a great deal of milk enough for them and to sell to neighbours.

They sold their cow to go to the fair.  They went and the entire family had a wonderful time.  After the fair they battled more than ever financially without their cow.  If you asked any of them if it was worth it years later, they all agreed that it was.  They had, had the experience of a life time.

We are alrightish financially and have much more than most.  We do live month to month but that is more due to past debt but that is a looong story.  A few months ago, we "sold the cow".  At the last minute we bought tickets and went to a Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert.  It was the first time I ever went to a concert.  It was a wonderful experience.  The rest of the month was shitty but we managed to get through.  (I'm still alive, I'm typing aren't I?)

Have you ever "sold the cow"?  Was it worth it?

  3. I think we all need to sell the cow every now and then and live a little. My daughter said that her life is complete after seeing RHCP.
